“Everyone was so nice and the support from the tutors was fantastic. I liked being at TBG, I got extra support on my learning and improved my IT Maths and English skills. I had been doing some voluntary wok and Job search helped me to get the job I wanted.
“I am now a support worker for people with learning difficulties at Essential Futures Ltd. I help people with their daily life and ensure they are looking after themselves to lead an independent lifestyle so are able to work or go on to further training. With my improved Literacy skills I now write all my own reports.
After fifteen years raising my family, training courses and voluntary work, I feel I have now achieved my goal by getting a job doing something I have always wanted to do” says Patricia.

e2e group raise £100 for charityA group of 16 to18 year-olds who started the ‘Entry 2 Employment’ programme at TBG Learning in Derby only four weeks before presented a cheque for £100 to Macmillan Cancer relief after organising an event at the centre as part of the “World’s biggest coffee morning”

The young people used the opportunity to run a charity event as part of their course which is helping them develop self–confidence, gain qualifications and skills for employment. They used teamwork to manage the project; including creating posters, arranging refreshments, Tombola and other fun games.

Fundraising for Breast Cancer Research UKMacMillan’s Victoria Harrison was presented with the cheque by two e2e learners during a celebration of achievement in October 2005. “Thank you, it’s tremendous to be benefiting from your achievements. Your efforts will really make a difference to cancer sufferers and their families” she said.

TBG Learning Derby started the e2e programme for 16 to 18 year old school leavers in autumn 2005 after winning new funding from the Learning and Skills Council. e2e helps 16 to 18 year-olds gain valuable skills, new qualifications and self confidence through tutored lessons, practical projects and work tasters with local employers.

e2e Pink Day
On the 28th October 2005 a carnival atmosphere took over the 6th floor of TBG Learning, Derby. Staff, learners and guests wore pink to help raise money for Breast Cancer Research UK as part of the “all come together” fundraising initiative.

The e2e learners played a key role organising refreshments, competitions, games and prizes. They decorated the 6th floor canteen with balloons and sold cakes and hot drinks. The event gave them a chance to show off their organisation, communication and team working skills to great effect.

Monica Cooper, e2e tutor says of the event “Everyone had a brilliant time. It was a good opportunity for all TBG learners and staff to get together and share in the Pink Day experience. The e2e group showed great imagination and ingenuity”

All Walk Together - Helen Docherty, Alex Pilkington & Monica CooperChatsworth “all walk together”
Several members of staff including Helen Doherty Skills for Life Manager, Alex Pilkington Sales and Marketing Executive, Louise Adams Jobsearch Tutor and Monica Cooper e2e Tutor, plus friends and family took part in the Chatsworth “all walk together” event.

The 10k sponsored walk took place on a very wet Sunday, but despite the torrential rain and muddy conditions everyone completed the full course along with about six hundred other walkers. They raised over a thousand pounds for Breast Cancer The Chatsworth walkResearch UK.

“The Chatsworth walk is something I have done over the past few years and really enjoy taking part ” says Helen Doherty “There is a real feeling of everyone coming together for a cause that is very close to our hearts. So many of us have been affected directly or indirectly by this disease. It’s a great feeling to know that we can make a difference”

2005 –Out with a bang for BET!
2005 -Out with a bang for BET!During the last three months of 2005, 16 learners on the BET (Basic Employability Training) course where successful in getting jobs.

The variety of posts included Night Club Bar Stewards, Sports Event Stewards, Chef, Cleaners, Kitchen Assistant, Painter/Decorator, Car Park Attendant, Car Valet, Packer, Building Labourer and Driver.

On approaching the end of his BET course, Gurjinder Mann was Gurjinder Mannone of several learners to get work at Pride Park to provide crowd control at events in the stadium. Having seen the position advertised in the Derby Evening Telegraph he used the resources of the dedicated course Job Search room and contacted the company with his details and forward a current CV.

He was quickly offered an interview where he impressed his future employers by displaying the right attributes for the job ie. willingness to work hard, and understand the requirements of the post and learn them quickly and thoroughly.

The job requires rapid assessment of situations arising in an unpredictable environment and reacting to them in an appropriate manner. Good communication skills are essential to pass information on to colleagues and supervisors.

“I didn’t really know what to expect, people told me all sorts of stories about trouble at football matches but before I started the job I tried it out for a match. I really enjoyed it and was set on right away. You have to watch the match because what happens on the pitch affects the way the crowd reacts.

Rachel, my Jobsearch Tutor helped me to apply for the job and go through the application form. It’s a good experience to have on my CV and might help me get work in security or something similar” says Gurjinder.

A week after the interview, Gurjinder started his new job.

Rebecca - looking forward to a fresh startRebecca - looking forward to a fresh start

Rebecca Mc Glinchy was referred to TBG Learning by her Jobcentre Plus Advisor. She was encouraged to try the Business Administration course. Although Rebecca had no office experience, her tutors where confident that she had the right qualities and personality to succeed.

“Before I started my course with TBG Learning, I had lost my direction in life. I knew I needed to improve my future, not just for myself but for my young son. I was very nervous and reluctant to try something new. With encouragement from the friendly tutors I began to enjoy my course.

“I passed my New CLAIT IT qualification and went on to take work placements at the University of Derby and Aptus Personnel, both of which I really enjoyed.

I am grateful for all the experience I have gained with TBG Learning and have now found a permanent job in administrative work in Derby. I am looking forward to a fresh start and would like to give a big ‘Thank You’ to everyone at TBG” says Rebecca.

Learners, staff and special guests joined a celebration of success at TBG Learning Derby.
TBG Learners were presented with certificates for IT, Literacy, Numeracy and English for Speakers of Other Languages by BBC Radio Derby presenter, David Whittaker.

“I am so proud!” says Liz Reeve, Centre Manager “The hard work and dedication of both learners and staff to achieve these results has all been worthwhile. For some learners it takes a great deal of courage just to make that first step to come in to the centre. To achieve these amazing results is a credit to them. The tutors should also be recognised for their support, guidance and dedication”

TBG Derby also received an award for its work with Remploy, a national organisation that works with people with disabilities and health problems. The “Leading the Way” commendation was awarded for a series of successful workshops, helping people back into employment. The workshops delivered by Sally Walker Community Learndirect Tutor, focused on particular areas of the job market such as Call Centres, Warehousing and Retail.

Learners compiled CV’s, wrote applications and prepared for interviews. A recent workshop on Retail resulted in two participants securing employment and a further two getting interviews for the jobs they wanted.

Howard Nelson of Remploy Interwork said “Following my first meeting with TBG Learning I was impressed not only by their knowledge and professionalism, but by their values and objectives which very closely mirrored those of Remploy Interwork”

“We have been very impressed by TBG Learning’s adaptability with the design and delivery of this special programme. The first call centre workshop in Derby was a resounding success resulting in seventy five percent of participants going directly into jobs within local call centres”
