South London Success Stories

The Deputy Mayor of Lambeth presents awards and qualifications

TBG South London celebrated the success of their learners by presenting both young people and adults with their acheivement awards and qualifications.

The Deputy Mayor of Lambeth was honoured and extremely proud of all the learners that had continued to attend the centre each day, even in times of difficulty the learners had continued to show dedication to their studies, and we all agreed on just how important it is to celebrate the success of those around us and ensure that individual acheivements are recognised within the community.

Susan Mills
Successful learner Susan Mills with her tutorsMy career started when both my sons finished their education I decided to do something with my life, I was reading the newspaper one day and I saw advertised, Computer Courses from “starters to advanced levels” with “Learn Direct.” When I joined Learn Direct back in 2002 it was the best thing I have done with my life and all it took was one phone call.

I have made friends with many people and the atmosphere is great here and I could not wish for a better tutor ( Barrington Black) he has been very helpful to me all the way through these courses and explained how things should be done.

I have completed courses, IT1, IT2, IT3, e.g. Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Databases; over the past 2 years. I have also gained a nationally recognised Maths and English Certificate, Key Skills Primer-Application of Number and Communication Skills- Levels 1 – 2

I have also taken on line tests in March and April of this year, levels 1 – 2 and passed both exams, Furthermore I enjoy learning there is so many courses to choose from and the tutors are very helpful.Susan Mills

Carole Abenaqui
Carole recieving her qualificationI am from the Ivory Coast and lived in France for 12 years. I came to London in 2000 from France to visit some friends, and I enjoyed it so I decided to live here.

I started the E-QUALS course in February 2005 this included IT Principles Wordprocessing Spreadsheets and Databases. After successfully completing these courses I decided to start the level 2 courses, which leads to an ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) qualification. I decided to embark on a course with LEARNDIRECT. I started a level 1 course in Literacy (Key Skill primer Communication Skills). When I joined this course it has been the
best thing in my life These courses give me the skills that I need to
improve my vocabulary.

I have made friends with many people and the atmosphere is great and I could not wish for better tutors, Barrington Black and Ibraham Bah, they are very helpful to me all the way through these courses and explain how things should be done.

I have now started doing a level 2 course in English. Next I would like to gain qualifications in Maths. My career goal is to become an IT Consultant. Carole Abenaqui

Ali Zaman
These courses give me the skills that I need to satisfy the criteria as outlined in my short-term career goal (administrator), as well as my long-term career goal (biomedical scientist) Till now I have gained invaluable experience (through completing the exercises and exams in the course) in outing what I have learnt to use. It has given me confidence to approach the more advanced IT areas as a result.

I started the IT1 courses through learndirect in November 2004 these courses are book based and quite easy to follow. I completed the exams at the end of January 2005 and have just received my OCR New CLAIT Certificate. I have now started doing the ECDL qualification using the IT2 online courses.

My goal is to be a biomedical scientist, or an IT consultant – I am as of yet undecided. But what I do know is that doing these courses and the one that I am planning to do next (software development and programming), will be absolutely crucial in getting there. Ali Zaman

I would like to express my profound gratitude and thanks for the patient and consistent tuition which I received, which thus has enable me to secure employment.

I started at the beginning with the E-QUALS package, but due over-commitment and pre-booked holiday arrangements I was unable to complete the course, even though before the course was finished I had secured a pass with credit in word processing.

I then decided to embark on a course with LEARNDIRECT as it offered me the time to study at my own pace. I started the course early in January of 2005, since then I have completed the New CLAIT Modules: Spreadsheet, Database, presentation and IT for beginners.

After successfully completing these courses I decided to start the level 2 courses which leads to an ECDL qualification. I started this in the middle of March. Hopefully when I have completed this I will be able to progress to level 3.

I had been at TBG- LEARNDIRECT for three months, when I was invited to attend an interview as a driver / co-ordinator for NACRO on their Net Navigator. As a result of training from TBG / LEARNDIRECT, I was able to demonstrate my skill and knowledge of computers which enabled me to secure the position. I had limited knowledge of Computers, but was able to enhance all the training and learn much more than I would ever have been able achieve anywhere else.

Herrica Bennett
My name is Herrica Bennett. I was born in Jamaica in the Parish of Manchester. I came to England in 1993 for a duration of two years, I fell in love with the country and I am now living in the country.

I did GCSE Maths and English at Brixton College in 1997. My GCSE results were poor and I was not satisfied so I decided to go back to college. Because of work and other commitments I couldn't prolong, though the intension was still there.

In December 2004 someone told me about TGB Learning so I rang and got some information on the courses that were available to me and I chose a New CLAIT computer course. I successfully completed that course in February 2005. Whilst completing the spreadsheet course my Tutor Barrington Black suggested that I would benefit from completing a numeracy course to gain a qualification equivalent to a GCSE certificate. I completed the course and took the test and passed level 1 in March 2005.

Currently I am working towards level 2 in numeracy and have also started the ECDL level 2 qualificatin. I am very proud of my achievements and will continue to do many more courses. My learn Direct Tutors help me a lot by making sure I have a full understanding of the subjects that I am doing. Herrica Bennett

Veronica Douglas
On joining this course at Learndirect my goal was to improve my job prospects. At the time I was a bus conductor I have during the course of learning acquired a job at the same company, helping to run an office with other members of staff, being in charge of task set for me on a weekly basis.

I did the Learndirect course Getting A Job between May and June 2004. These courses have helped me a great deal with my C.V, Interview techniques and presenting my daily tasks and myself. I started the New CLAIT course in September 2004 and completed the following courses:

This has led to a New CLAIT qualification. This is just the start. The other package I use daily is Spreadsheet. I also operate a computerised cash book and a written cash book which both have to balance. I hope to go on to the ECDL course which will help me to advance further. I have enjoyed my learning at Learndirect. Veronica Douglas
