The Clacton-on-Sea centre of training company TBG Learning has officially unveiled ’To be gorgeous’, a salon for young people to learn nail and beauty industry skills.

The centre in Carnavon Road is the most successful local provider of the ‘Entry to Employment’ programme for 16-18 year-olds and the new facilities, unveiled by The Chairman of Tendring District Council, Peter Balbirnie, are giving young people a new option as part of their course, which includes literacy, numeracy and computer skills. Other choices on e2e include cookery skills and painting and decorating.

The ‘e2e’ programme in Clacton has helped hundreds of local young people to build their skills and confidence before progressing into further education, apprenticeships, and employment.

The Chairman of Tendring District Council, Peter Balbirnie, and his wife Mavis visited the centre on Thursday 13th March and enjoyed some pampering from the Nail and Beauty learners. Mr Balbirnie commented:

“The new Nail & Beauty facilities are excellent, and the current learners seem to be thoroughly enjoying the course so far. It is very exciting for the young people because many new career opportunities are now available in this industry. From what I saw I would encourage any young person to visit the centre and see for themselves.”

Keisha Duly, one of 12 girls who are spending one day per week learning skills including facials, manicures, massage and waxing, said:

“I thought I would enjoy this type of thing but now I’ve tried it I know I do! I now want to do a Beauty course at college and have a career in it.”

Rob Fitt, Learning Centre Manager added:

“64% of our e2e learners are progressing on to further education, apprenticeships or employment, which is above the national target. The new ‘Nail and Beauty’ option is proving to be very popular and some of the girls are already keen to train for a career in the industry. We will be helping help them to apply for a college course”.

Councillor and Mrs Balbirnie toured the Tendring TBG Learning Centre where they also met adult learners who are following online courses via its Learndirect Centre, including the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), and ‘skills for life’ qualifications in numeracy and literacy, amongst others.
