OVER 50s TO RECEIVE EMPLOYMENT BOOST

23th June 2006
New age discrimination laws come into effect on 1st October and one London training company, TBG Learning, is offering free help to those aged 50 plus to improve their basic skills and find employment. Fifty Plus Routes to Employment, which is receiving £250,000 in funding from the London Development Agency, aims to improve the lives of 140 over 50s and their families living in some of London's most deprived areas.

Paul Gallagher, Head of Skills & Employment Policy at the London Development Agency, said: "London's over 50s have so much to offer employers, but many often miss out on job opportunities because they lack confidence and basic skills. Fifty Plus Routes to Employment will provide the support and training they need to boost their job prospects."

Fifty Plus Routes to Employment is a programme of learning that gives basic literacy and numeracy and/or language support and IT skills. Everyone who takes part also receives helps and advice in finding suitable work experience, employment or further education. The training leads to recognised City and Guilds qualifications which will boost participants' chances in the labour market. "TBG Learning is highly experienced in helping people who have had a poor experience of the education system to increase their skill and qualification levels, develop confidence and find employment. The support given on this programme will help address the issues of longstanding discrimination of older people in the labour market", said Sue Gidman, Operations Director, TBG Learning.

TBG Learning is an independent learning provider with centres in Barking, Brixton, Ealing, Newham and Tower Hamlets and the over 50s programme is available at all centres.

Anyone interested should telephone or call in at a TBG Learning centre or telephone 020 7274 4106 for further information.
