NEW HELP FOR UNEMPLOYED IN NEWHAM
31 July 2006

A training centre in Newham which has made itself part of the community by helping the unemployed to improve their confidence in areas such as English language speaking, has won new funding to help adults aged 25 and over to find work.
TBG Learning, based in Claughton Road in Newham, is now offering a 13 week course for local long term unemployed people on the New Deal programme who are claiming Jobseekers Allowance and are referred to its centre by Jobcentre Plus. The course includes help in writing a CV, job search and building confidence in basic skills such as using the computer. Every learner then gets a work placement with a local employer and spends one day per week back at TBG Learning increasing their skills.
One of the first to try the course is Rory Haslam from Forest Gate, who has been unemployed for five years and as a result of the course has been offered an interview with the community police in the City.
“When I came to TBG Learning I knew nothing about computers and I’ve already learnt a lot. I didn’t know how to write a letter to an employer or find out about jobs on the internet but thanks to my good tutor I do now. He’s taught me a lot”, said Rory Haslam.
Apart from the New Deal course, TBG Learning has further courses starting this autumn including a basic IT course ‘Your Starter Pack’ for anyone who hasn’t used a computer before and ‘Fifty Plus Routes to Employment’ for people aged over fifty.
