Nigel Kemp, an NVQ assessor from the Derby office of TBG Learning is teaming up with his lifelong friend and retired boxer Gary Beardsley to open a new boxing club in Belper.
He and Gary – who had 27 professional bouts and won the British masters title at light middle weight and middle weight following a successful amateur career – will run sessions at The Old Belper School between 6.30pm and 7.30pm every Tuesday and 6pm and 7pm on Thursdays.
So far the pair have each contributed £700 of their own money to launch the Belper Fitness Centre which Nigel hopes will benefit the area’s young people in a similar way to his work with the not-for-profit training firm he works for.
He said: “We have wanted to do something that would provide young people in the local community with something to do for a while now.
“With all the cuts going on at the moment youth clubs and places likes that are closing down all the time and there is not a lot for them to do around here.
“The work I do with TBG Learning is all about empowering people and giving them the confidence to improve their employability and get back into work.
“Boxing can have a similar effect on people and this is what we are hoping to achieve with this club, as well as giving people somewhere to improve their fitness and possibly take up the sport competitively under Gary’s tutelage, should they wish to.
“We are not looking to make any money out of this, any money made from this club will go straight back into improving it.”
TBG Learning has offices all over the country including three in Derbyshire – in Gower Street, Derby, Alfreton and Chesterfield.
Craig Barber is Nigel’s manager at TBG Learning and has been delighted to see him trying to make a difference in such a positive way outside, as well as inside, work.
He said: “Nigel has been with us for three years now and this type of selfless behaviour is typical of him, he is passionate about helping people and that’s part of the reason he is such a valuable member of our team.
“We will be looking to support Nigel and Gary with this project in any way we can.
“TBG Learning has sponsored them to provide further funding while a number of the staff are attending the sessions too.”
